Hummingbird Safari                      Saturday, March 23   $250  ($200)

This safari is located between Santa Paula and Ventura on Highway 126, west of Santa Clarita and Highway 5.  We shoot dozens of hummingbirds that swarm to several feeders and roost and rest in the trees and shrubs around the feeders.  The birds are active all day providing nearly non-stop shooting action as they feed and buzz each other constantly.  Some feeders are in the shade while others are in the full sun.  Come prepared with a tripod, as long a lens as you have (shooting at minimum close focusing distances), and cards for a thousand images.  An external hot shoe mounted flash is also useful, please don't bring multiple flash setups, as mine will be there for others to use if desired.  This is a very easy safari (physically) and an opportunity to refine your shooting techniques with these small, quick-moving subjects. Also, plenty of other birds are around to photograph as well.

Anna's, Allen's, and Black-throated are the most common, with Rufous, Costa's, and Calliope as possible subjects as well.

Reservations

We meet on location in Santa Paula at 7:30am.  Since this is near a private home the number of photographers is limited.  We will take lunch about 11:30 to 12:30 and resume shooting until about 3:30pm. The action can be fast and continuous.
